1st gear start
So I contacted a good surgeon about the dead/dying tranny in my 500E. As it turns out, he has a ZF Factory trained tech there who does the tranny work. I asked if he could redo my valve body to activate the 1st gear start, he said YES, I asked if he could also "rig up" an ASR defeat mechanism and he said......yes(I think). But anyway a yes on the 1st gear will be pretty cool. The ASR defeat would just be awesome ESPECIALLY if its all done as part of the rebuild charge that the aftermarket Warranty eats.
So that's a complete tranny rebuilt + new tranny mount +new guibo + new neutral switch + new shift lever bushing, + ..... What else should I repair/replace as a part of this repair while I'm in there??? |

I also recommend...
...replacing your shock strut bushings, if they show cracking/signs of wear.

Transmission stuff
Thanks Scott, But I'm speaking of those parts that it would make sense to replace as a part of the Transmission R/R ....like additionally the rear main seal

I'd replace all the clutches, and the B2 piston.
Also, see if they can upgrade to the Kevlar clutches used in the SL600. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

How about using a tranny from a SL600? Should bolt right-up and already be reinforced for 400+ ft-lb of torque.

I'm just trying to get whatever the Insurance Boys are going to pay for. I can't even get a price on the SL600 transmission. The computer at the dealership(at least my local dealer) requires that they enter the VIN to get the specifcs on the tranny(verifys that the one that you are asking about IS the one that they are giving you info on)......
Also although the 2 may be interchangable in theory there are probably some pretty significant differences (interal planetary gears etc) between the two. I once change out the 350 Tranny in my '78 Z28 to that of a 400 tranny which came out of ???. There was a definite difference in the shifting characteristics even though the final drive ratio was the same. That's the only thing about doing "gearing type" swaps, unless it already tried and tested, you may not get the results that you were expecting. Last edited by aldedmon; 06-27-2003 at 03:32 PM. |

What about lowering the rpms in 4th gear or better yet a 5th gear?

Both would no doubt have adverse affects on the overall performance of the car. A lower gear ratio in 4th might take the car out of the power band and definitely would make the car seems less powerful(ask any of the 400E/E420 owners who have removed the 2.24 and replced them with 2.82's) and may even add strain to the motor by having it attempt to pull the load at those lower rev's(remember higher RPM = Higher speed= higher wind resistance etc. so by lowering / reducing RPM the engine might be under a boit of strain). As to adding a 5th gear. Its very cost prohibitive to redesign an existing 4 speed Auto tranny to a 5 sp. You pretty much have to design this type change from the ground up.

So how did your tranny rebuild go?
BTW: I bet the hydraullic 5-speed (not electronic) from a W140 500SEL would work! :-) neil |

Tranny rebuild/Chip
Rebuild/replace went Great.
I have a sorry @$$ aftermarket warranty and they pay basically for parts / tax....But anyway, I decided to go with a replacement unit. I ponied up another $650 to have them replace the tranny with a factory rebuild 500E specific unit. Got a 2 yr warranty from MB that way parts & labor. That's the only way to go. Smooth as silk. I still gotta get that chip from you too. After I recoup from the holidays and get my self straight , I'm going get the chip first thing |
