Problem #3 (of 3):

As if the other 2 issues were not enough, I have a third problem:

my central locking system/mechanism/pump appears to be fornicated... or I have a vacuum leak, somewhere.

Symptoms:

- car takes up to 30 seconds to recover from locking
- car is locked from the outside, then (sometimes) cannot be unlocked without excessive force in <30 seconds
- car does not unlock from inside (sometimes) without excessive force in <30 seconds

(*sigh*)^3

Maybe a door vacuum element has gone bad, or even trunk or gas door flap vacuum element.

OR

The vacuum line going to the door has been broken by the door pannels.

The diesel guys on the forum seem to really know the vacuum line problems pretty well. For my car, the door element was bad, I figured it out buy getting a vacuum pump (hand operated) and pulling up the floor mats and seeing which vacuum line held vacuum. In the repair CD I believe it shows which line goes to which door. Some of the other w124 guys can give you more insight. All my vacuum knowledge is w123 based.

thank you, Austin

I realize there is no easy soltuion to this troubleshooting-intensive problem.

I'll just have to go through every line from the pump.

Is there a vacuum-tester tool I can buy... or should I simply use a McDonald's straw?

also...

How shall I disconnect the yellow vacuum lines at the central locking pump - do they simply pull straight out, by hand?

Are there any tricks to removing the central locking pump, entirely? I would like to replace mine, next week.

I dont think a mcdonalds straw would work.

I have one exactly like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2332208828&category=42291

You can find it at autozone, kragen, etc.

Just pull gently. Try not to break the rubber connectors. It might be a good idea to replace the rubber connectors sometimes they leak.

I have never replaced a pump in a gasoline car, they are run electronically though, I have in a diesel but they have a mechanical vacuum pump attached to the engine.

Test the lines, then if something isnt holding vacuum, then its broken or there is a leak going to the element. Hold at 15psi for at least a minute. Mercedes has a spec in the CD that shows you how to work on your car, however I am not sure of it exactly, but my recommendation seems to work for me.

Order some replacement rubber connectors (either bulk line, or the pre-formed curved ones). If you're going through the labor to inspect them, you might as well replace them.

Where are the rubber connectors to which you are referring located, please?

At the central locking pump, itself, I see only rigid, yellow vacuum lines and yellow, rigid, plastic "acorn-ends" (in addition to electrical connectors, obviously).

Please reply to my question, above, when you have a chance.

I will be installing a new central locking pump, tomorrow night.

Thank you,
