Thumbs up They are worth it

I just put a set of r4s pads on my car, strangely enough I thought I didnt need to change them, but I was tired of the dust and lo and behold...Inner right front OEM pad was wearing down to nothing.(Car had 15,000 original miles in 18 months)

These Porterfields are really strong,,less pedal pressure needed, almost 350 miles a week on the car,and no noticeable dust, until you run your finger over the lip,and you can see some light brownish dust, but it a great improvement. I paid $99 for the front, and $79 for the rear.Just gotta Bed them the way they recommend. Definitely would buy them again.

thanks for the input. I am glad you like them.

Mercedes brake compound has a form of graphite in it, so they look more dirty on the wheels because its easy to see the black on the wheels.

I think they're about the best pads on the market for Mercedes. There are other high-perf mfr's of pads, like Performance Friction, Hawk, etc but they don't offer MB pads for some dumbass reason. Porterfield does. I like the feel much better and they are low dust. They are also the ONLY pads I have EVER installed new, with new rotors, that had strong bite *immediately* after installation. Usually with new pads (and rotors), the new pads feel like greased wood for several miles until they bed in, and are still scary for the first day or two before becoming normal. The Porterfields bit hard right away from the very first stop - surprised the heck out of me.

Anyway, I like 'em. Just go very easy on break-in, and the R4-S procedure is not the same as the R4! Just go easy on them for several hundred miles. With new rotors, make that even longer, and gradually stop harder over a few hundred miles, don't bed in for 100mi and then do panic stop torture tests. (BT, DT, it wasn't pretty.) I'd love to try Performance Friction pads since I use them on my race bike, and they're THE hot stuff for racing - fantastic feel. I was bummed that PF doesn't make pads for the MB...

On a 500E, IMHO, the R4S works well ONLY on the street. Forget track or autocross use where there is heavy braking.

I'm going to try the track version R4. . .

How about revivng this group buy with a longer purchase window, say 6-8 weeks. I definitely want a set of front and rear R4S pads for my 86 300E, but I have plenty of meat left on the old pads. If everyone who wants them would be willing to put in a firm commitment to wait that long and still buy them I think that it could work. With a minimum purchase of $2000 it's only going to take about 15 - 25 people depending on whether they're buying fronts only or both front and rears. Maybe if it were cross-posted to the Tech Help and the Wheels and Tires forum we could pick up some more buyers.

Hello.

It would be great to do a group buy, however it is a lot of time commitment upon the organizer's (me) part. Now that I am in school, I don't think that I would have enough time to do this. I wanted to do it before school started, but I guess there wasn't enough interest.

Sorry,

Same for me as I mentioned before - one set front, one set rear, for a 1995 E420. Oh yeah - R4-S compound.

I'm in for R4-S front and rear pads for my '86 300E.

Gary

PS - Have you considered cross-posting this to the other forums? There seems to be a lot more traffic in Tech Help. You would probably get more responses.

Everyone that is for sure send me an email with your full name, contact information, what car you have, and which pads you want. Front & rear and which type of porterfield pads. I am going to make a spreadsheet.
