Like Placo1 says -
Pls have it checked over carefully. Learn from my story:
Buyer beware story - pls read as I need advice Also the news on my story is that I decided to take Mr. Kim to court and tuesday the 18th, I had my day in court. I won my case and the judge got to ask Mr. Kim the tough questions, I wanted answers to. There is much more to tell and I will write up a summary later this week. Let me just say it was a very education experience, but not one I am eager to repeate. The judge started out by saying to me: (losely rewritten) - have you considered mitigation. The thing is that I have seen a lot of car related cases and the outcome in these cases does not speak in your favor. Most by far end up relying on he/she said, which has no legal basis. Again have you considered mitigation? To be continued..... Jari |

If properly converted, and all debris cleared out between A/C condenser and radiator, a W124's A/C system is COLD even in the high humidity summers of Jacksonville, Florida.
My 1988 W124 wagon "freezes" most people and it was converted to R134a with ALL the parts MB did when they converted in the 90's. The key to good city performance is not only having the debris removed, and have the proper amount of R134a (too much is bad), but to either have the dual aux. fans re-wired to immediately turn on when the A/C is switched on, or to remove the viscous fan and install an electric puller fan on it's own thermostat for increased air-flow at low-speeds. My wife's 500E with stock R134a, is also just as cold. :-) neil |

I'm a cold freak and the E500 is plenty cold. I live in Dallas and don't think my A/C has ever been touched; car has 117K miles. Only complaint: when you start car for first time and pull out into traffic and then have to wait at a light or something, the air is not cold until the car starts moving. Once the air gets cold, then it is always cold. Bottom line - don't worry about the A/C as long as the system is working as intended.

I would heavily lean towards the purchace of the 500E/E500 over the C43 ... do research on this Forum and you'll be enlighted.

The a/c in my E500 works fine on R134 in Austin temperatures. Having lived in Maryland, I can vouch that a properly functioning a/c in an E500E would be fine for Virginia weather.
A mechanic converted my 190E from R12 to R134 and the performance was terrible. The 190E was never delivered from the factory with R134, so there wasn't a larger condenser available to use in the conversion. Putting spacers between the stock condenser and radiator helped, but after a few years of trouble with the conversion I threw in the towel and converted back to R12; the cooling is now decent once again. Thank you all. I am trying to get the time to go see it....other bidders interested so may not be able to pull this off but trying to....difficult to justify since my 560SL is in really excellent condition but what the hell.

I understand that there is a factory designated temp range for proper output of A/C air
An appropriate thermometer can measure the A/C temp air output on the candidate car and you can come to your own conclusions regarding A/C operation and your personal A/C performance thresholds fwiw- on my '92 300e (R12) and '94 e500 (R134a) both systems shoot bone-chilling A/C'd air out in taxing conditions (over 100 degree dry ambient temps) no problemo. The e500 has a new a/c evaporator though- which moved a/c performance from fully adequate to bone-chilling. I will need to do a similar evaporator replacement on the '94 E320 Coupe to move a/c output to the bone-chilling range. hope this helps -fad |

I won't be able to see it in person but I spoke to the seller, and he is bring to a Mercedes dealer for a complete inspection.
He claims the only issue is a rough idle when first warming up, and that this is a new development (could be anything). I may very well end up buying this without having actually seen it. Now for the joys of selling my 560sl with no a/c...ugh. |

Thanks everyone. I am making a proposal tonight....will update on how it goes....buying long distance isn't easy but I think I can pull this off.
I will miss the SL and hopefully can get $14k to $12k for it, even with the AC and rattles ..(90k miles, new rag top, new paint, new tires, new brakes, rotors, new interior wood). |

As an update, I have a friend checking out the 500E tomorrow for me. I found another very nice one for sale but it's been lowered and has a remus exhaust and I'd rather have a plusher and quieter ride.

The latest....couldn't get anyone to see the 500E ($25.5k, 44k miles, looks to be in perfect condition), so I'm having a mercedes dealership have a look. Do I need to have compression tests, etc.... done? What does the Board recommend on this? I am told it was in an accident once in its life.
And, is this really worth the trouble...is it that much better than my 560SL? |

R U lookin at 2 E500 s ?
I thought you said it had 24500 on the clock.
These cars do not take well to accidents especially one that required a low milage vehicle to be completely repainted. Find a body shop with a frame straightening capability and bring the car there for a full inspection. If the car was repaired by a shop not aware of the modifications made by the Porsche folks, it will never be right. There are a lot of E500s on the market without any stories attached - be selective Tom |
