W140 5-speed tranny (non-electric) & it's ratios
Will the 5-speed automatic tranny (722.502/508) fit from a 1992-1995 W140.032/033 (300SE/S320) into a non-V8 W124, and more importantly take the abuse from a C36 engine? I believe ONLY the V8 W124's had the wider tranny tunnel.
It should bolt-up since the 300SE/S320 used the M104 block; and since it's non-electric, should be easy to hook-up & adjust. I'd like to go to higher rear-end diff (e.g., 3.46 or 3.69) but only with the 5th gear overdrive for a little more relaxed highway cruising. I was contemplating the 5-speed automatic from an early 300SL (R129) but I heard those tranny's are VERY weak. Also, what are the ratios for the 722.502 and 722.508 ? Thanks, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

hey Neil,
the late model w124 e320 had the 5-speed auto and i believe it's the unit out of the w140, but I will have to make sure of that when I get home tonight and also check the ratios for you. The c36 never the 5-speed unit in Europe or the US, nor did the rare w124 E36, so as to the reliablilty of the combo, your guess is as good as mine! I have contemplated installing the 5-speed unit from the SL on my w126, but there are so may combos to consider, I haven't figured out yet what is possible and also matches my driving style/desires the best. I would very much enjoy the opportunity to pick your brain on this issue, as I will be following in your foot steps in the years to come.

Jon, in the USA, the 1995 W124 E320 never came with the 5-speed automatic stock, at least per the MB EPC.
The 1997 C36 came with the *electronic* 5-speed, but not the hydraullic 5-speed found in the R129 300SL and the W140 300SE/S320. :-) neil |

5-speed automatic in a W124 E420?
I've been looking for a way to wake up the performance in my 1995 E420. Moving to a 2.82 rear end from the pathetic stock 2.24 has been suggested by many. However - with the revelation here that there's a 5-speed auto, non-electronic that might fit my car, would that be a better upgrade path? I'd like to retain my mileage, but get better performance. Does anyone know if this transmission would be compatible with a '95 E420?
Thanks, Troy K. 1995 E420 72k |

Hey Neil,
Sorry I've been busy with Turkeyday, haven't been in front of a comp. I was originally referencing the 5-speed auto from Europe! The US w124s never received this trans. I remember distinctly when I was in Europe seeing M104 3.2s running around with 5-speed autos! The shift gate is the same as the w140 300se/s320 with D and the to the left 4, then on down the line like our framiliar shift gate here in the US. The ratios for the Euro 5-speed auto are: I. 3.87:1 II. 2.25:1 III. 1.44:1 IV. 1.00:1 V. 0.75:1 These are the same ratios as the US w140 300se/s320 transmission, so I believe its the same trans. BTW, the w140 used a 3.69 diff and the E320 used a 3.06 with this trans. Hope this helps!
