New Carpet in the 500E

Guys,
I am interested if any of you can confirm the problem I am experiencing.

I purchased new carpet (124.680.36.41 --> superseded to 124.680.56.41) for the car this fall and tried to install last weekend. The large center section didn't fit well at all....
The main problem was the holes cut for the seat rails to mount to the transmission tunnel about 5 inches from the front edge of the rear seats. It seems the carpet had 2 holes almost in alignment with each other. The bolt holes in the trans tunnel are offset from each other with the passenger side about 1 inch to the rear.
My old carpet fit fine! The holes were staggered. 4" right side and 5" left.

The dealer got another piece in from the distribution in Dallas but it seems to be the same item.

Secondly, it doesn't fit well over the rear of the trans tunnel (too tall - carpet buckles when pushed down) and the seat mount point holes are 18" on center and my bolts are about 16.5" on center.

If any of you with 500E's could check the distance from the rear of the black plastic cover on the seatrail mount to the end of the carpet I would be curious if it is obvious that the left / right rails are staggered and not aligned with each other across the hump.

I will probably take it to the dealer and have them look at it to determine if MB OEM parts quality is failing or if this is just a bad part.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Here is a picture of the carpet, I put pens in the rear edge of the holes to identify the offset between them.

Just a guess...

Bryan,
Are you sure you got 500E specific carpet? The seat mounts are narrower on the .036 cars to accomodate the wider trans tunnel. Just a guess, but it sounds like you are trying to install regular 124 carpet in your car.

That is interesting Glen. I wasn't aware the carpet was different.
The 36.41 number was stock from the old piece.
The 56.41 is an updated superceded number.
The dealer did use my VIN to look up the correct item/colorcode etc....

Bryan,

I just checked mine and they are offset, never noticed that before. I didn't measure but you can definitely visually see the offset. Glen's right, the tranny tunnel on our cars was wider, wonder if they sold you the standard W124 carpeting.

Thanks Afshin!
At least I am not losing my marbles...yet!

I spoke w/Scott Shell about his carpet he replaced this year
and he had no problems. I did not get a part number from him.
My parts guy is pretty good, I am leaning toward MB discontinuing the parts for the 500E and only offering a compromised part...it really looks like it is a multi-fit item.
It has cutouts that were not on the original piece as well as some differences in the general shape of the molding.

The other problem I had was getting one of the pieces along the front rocker / doorsills in the correct color. I was told it was no longer available in my color (parchment) but was in a different shade of cream.

For the kind of $$ they charge for the carpet set, they should fit very, very well.

93 models may be different

I just heard back from Scott Shell, seems his 93 500E has the mount points equidistant from the rear....

Maybe that is why the new carpet worked for him.

Can anyone else with a 93/94 confirm or deny the setup?

Thanks!

Thanks Glen,
Maybe Scott misunderstood what I was asking him to look at.

I was concerned MB changed the floorpan design somewhere mid 1992/93 when they changed engines....

I have sent email to MB classic center as I feel this is an important enough vehicle that they should not be selling an ill fitting replacement part for it.

We'll see what type of response I get.
