No More Sls!

Well I finally removed my SLS suspension & installed a 400E P/S pump and koni adjustables. Wow! alll I have to say is nice and firm in the rear. Except. I am still runnig the 500E coils a bit to soft, looking for some 400E H&R's. Also runnig for the mean time spring pad from a newer style E class E430 spring pads, 5 bump. So the car is raised slightly in the rear till I can find me some 400E coils.

Hi Fad. Long time. Well I just didn't like that cushy ride in the rear. All sLS car I have driven always didnt feeling sporty enough for me. Also . The thing steering some much easier now. It waslike the the 500E,P/S pump. Worked a littler harder. Taking some power or something away from the engine. Anyways. I like it,so far I have to work out the bugs but its good. A firend of mineis a engineering coordinator @ eibach. So hopefully they came come up with a stiff coil spring for me in the rear. The H&R's just can't hold the weight like I would like it to.

Guido,

I find it interesting that on a number of occasions you've said the rear susp. is too soft on 500Es with sls. Now, I sorta feel like the front's perhaps under-damped a bit, but that the rear end does a good job of acquitting itself and keeping the back end planted. As you know, I've tracked my car more than a few times, and the car's oversteered very, very few times and always provoked by some questionable move on my part. I've driven several other 500Es (although only 1 other on a track) and they felt pretty much the same to me.

Now, I may be completely wrong here because I feel my knowledge is limited in this area; so, please do what you can to describe either the feeling or the situation(s) that makes you feel it's too soft back there. BTW, were your Nitrogen cells current?

FWIW I've switched to H&R lowering springs, and retained the SLS. However, I've still got one shock making noise back there! Otherwise, I'm happy with the slightly firmer ride, and considerably quiker turn-in response (and it transitions better, I think because the front doesn't move around so much due to the higher spring rates)

Thanks in advance

SLS

Hi Micheal. I know its sound crazy. Its a weird feeling ask Carl greenberg. He drove my car. It feel like it was riding on the coil springs in rear. But I have all new shocks back there about a yr old and the hydro shocks and the cells. Say @ 80 mph I do a lane change. The who back end would sway from left to right. But its not a sway bar feeling. Get with Greenberg to give you some feed back. I know what you mean about the SLs being ok, on other 500's I drove marks,I drove in carls. But for some reason the characateristics of reart handling on mine is just ****!

So I said Ok I am going to convetional in the reare. I did that it got a lot better. I I havi kon's in the rear with my 500E H & R's.

I need stiff springs in the rear. I am going to repl with some 400E
srpings. and see what happens also I am going to repl my subframe mounts in the new yr coming up.

I wish they had spell checker my typing sucks.

Ciao Pisan!

Thanks Guido

For your input. It's actually got me thinkin' you've got something else going on back there. Have you replaced those two cheapest links in the rear suspension, as they've been upgraded since our cars were born(I know one's a thrust arm; the other I don't know but both are towards the front of the car)? I did mine in the hopes that it'd cure my shock noise, and though the noise remains the car's even more controlled back there (making it hard to justify the cost of a new shock)

I'll call Carl.

Regards and happy holidays!

The E420 was available in Europe with a Sportline kit. The rear, non-SLS springs are the same as the 124.030/032 Sportline rear springs. I'd try a set of those to match up with your stock front seutp.

Hi Scott. Well I am still getting the bugs out.

After removing the rear shocks. The 500E coil spring could not handle the weight. Just was slammed to the ground. Well I installed 1998 SL500 springs. Now the thing looks like a 4WD .So I have to cut a coil. All in the name of no more SLS.

Happy new yr by the way.

Didn't see you for a while. you got any pics from Renntach?

Post them on your site.

See ya G-dog.

I would definitely go 400E Euro Sportline springs all around.

BTW: I finally changed out the rear-subframe bushings and differential mount bushings, and all new/updated links (OE-only!) on the wagon, even though my Santa Barbara and Jacksonville techs said the bushings "LOOKED" fine.

The handling is SO MUCH better, and the ride is better as well.

Remember 10 years is at the MAXIMUM for any rubber-type suspension component.

I'm going to do the same with the 500E soon.

I'll second both of those motions heartily. Don't screw with non-W124 springs, use the proper E420 Sportline stuff. And any rubber parts over 10 years old are very likely to require replacement even though they might *look* fine!

Per Dave on another post:

Part numbers for the Euro 400E SportLine suspension:
E500 Front sway bar: 124 323 72 65
E500 front sway bushings: 124 323 51 85 (2 req'd)
E500 front sway bushings: 124 323 47 85 (2 req'd)
E420 Euro Sport front springs: 124 321 42 04
1 bump spring pads: 201 321 09 84

E500 rear sway bar: 124 326 25 65
E500 rear sway bar bushings: 201-326-16-81
E420 Euro Sport rear springs: 124 324 35 04 (self-leveling)
E420 Euro Sport rear springs: 124 324 28 04 (NON self-leveling, shorter)
E420 Euro Sport rear springs: 124 324 36 04 (NON self-leveling, taller)
4 bump rear spring pads: 201 325 12 44

As for pricing, here's the MB list prices as of Nov 2002:

124-321-42-04 - FRONT SPRING - $76.00 (Euro 400E Sport spring)
124-321-35-04 - FRONT SPRING - $83.00 (500E spring)
124-320-71-30 - SHOCK ABSORB - $184.25 (Strut for 500E and 400E Sport)

124-324-28-04 - REAR SPRING - $62.00 (6-cyl Sportline, stiffer of 2 avail; "soft" for E420)
124-324-35-04 - REAR SPRING - $87.00 (E420 Sport self-level only)
124-324-36-04 - REAR SPRING - $95.00 (Euro EPC shows this as stiffer opt, or 28-04 for softer/less load)
124-320-23-31 - SHOCK ABSORB - $93.00 (Rear Sportline shock for 300E/400E)

BTW - better plan on $350-$400 for the 500E sway bars, they are NOT cheap - especially the rear, bushings are ~$25 each!

Thanks, Neil. Two quick comments:

1- If USA dealers claim they can't get the European Sportline springs, order them through www.speed-autoteile.com as they can definitely get them. Same goes for any Euro parts that US dealers can't obtain (like replacement Euro light lenses, etc).

2- The 500E rear sway bar bushings have been superceded to a 210-number that is only ~$6/each, and has a Teflon inner sleeve like the front bushings. Details on the sway bar stuff is here:

http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/124_swaybars.pdf

One of these days I'm going to create a complete spreadsheet with all Sportline part numbers for all 124 chassis, that will save time digging up old posts like this!

Dave- I thought it was Kevlar? Regardless $6 is much better than $18+ dollars for a bushing.

Is the updated bushing from a E55 AMG . . .
