drivetrain strength (hot rodding?)

i'am pondering the thought of hot rodding an old SEL 4.5l; circa 71. I was hoping someone could give me some idea of the strength of the rear end and axels. how much torque could i apply to the original drivetrain from the driveshaft backward? I want to do this as economically as possible using a Chevy small block and tranny. I know, sacrilage, but this car is in rough shape. I want it for its unique body as a hot rod and its independant suspension for its handling. a real sleeper that i can take to the track.

I want to put as much power into it as i can without changing the suspension too much. If a change is needed, what suggestions do you have?
