The Valentine One is a great radar.

The K40 system is probably the best out, but is priced accordingly. The k40 is nice because all you see is two little LED's on your speedo.

I just got a Valentine 1 (V1). It was a small fortune at $400.

If you want a budget type, get a Beltronics 925 Express. I think they go for around $100, and they also (like the V1) have 360 degree detection, Ka band, X band, laser, VAG, and radar detector detector (incase you drive through Virginia or Washington DC where radar detectors are illegal).

My V1 is too new (only three days old) for me to tell you how good it is, but the Beltronics 920 I had before did pick up a few cops in the short time I used it...

Why would you need a radar detector. MB puts something in all of their cars to prevent the driver from getting a speeding ticket

I can recommend the V1 as well. To me, the directional arrows help a lot.

The V1 is the best detector I have ever owned. I can't use anything else now that I've used "the arrows"...

there putting speeding cameras up around here that will ticket for 2 mph over, but no insurance increase and 50 dollar ticket. Radar should pick them up easy though

Valentine-1 rocks.

The K-40 is nice because it can be totally hidden, but it is EXPENSIVE. Also, the antennas mount very low so you lose a little range. If you use a "normal" type, mount it as high as possible on the windshield, preferably above the rear view mirror:

I've got a assport SR7 with one of the ZR-3 shifter thingies in my 300e. My wife uses a passport 8500 with a ZR-3 in her car.

Both seem to work really well. I think the SR-7 has a little better range, even though the radar antenna is about 2 feet lower in the car.

THe SR-7 is a difficult install in the 300e. In order to mount the radar antenna behind the grill, I had to move the horns. There was no other spot I could find with enough room between the radiator and the grill. Putting the antenna under the bumper would only give about 8" above the road.

Laser antannae in the front were another pain. I made some thin sheetmetal (316SS) brackets that went between the headlight and the trim piece, The sensors sit under the wipers. I did not have to drill exterior sheetmetal.

Rear antenna was easy. I had to remove the license plate frame.

In the other car, I put the 8500 over the rear-view mirror, and hard-wired it into car.

My wife is a cop-magnet. After I put this in her car, the every three month speeding ticket stopped. I'm a lead-foot. Even so, I almost never get pulled over. I do, however, notice a lot more patrol cars now. I put the SR-7 in after I was pulled over doing 98 in a 75 about 2 days after buying the 300e. Verbal warning. I spent the fine money on a radar detector.

I have a friend with a V-1 in his car. Also an excellent unit. IMHO, there is no discernable difference between any of these detectors.

I do like the remote mount. I also really like the laser scrambler. I've driven past a couple of speedtraps where there is about 5 cars pulled over, and the laser gunner is staring at me as I drive innocently past.

I would recommend a radar "locater", i.e. a unit with a rear antenna - the V-1, K-40, and SR-7 are the only ones I know of. Once you get used to having that added info you can't goback. I have noticed that a LOT of police are using the Ka band guns now, which are very low power and you get a rather late warning. Haven't seen laser in my area yet.

Do the laser "scrambler" actually work? Every radar jammer on the market is a complete scam and therefore I'm quite skeptical about the equivalen laser products.

apparently, laser jamming is not illegal. (Radar jamming is very illegal). Bel, Passport, and k40 all make jamming units, which are engineered and work pretty well. You can't just go tearing past the cop, he will get you as you get closer, but it is hard to lock on, and you can slow down.

There are a few radar detector rating web sites who have also tested the laser jammers.

My Valentine-1 paid for itself at least twice this last weekend...1500 miles in 3 days and many a close call.

GSXR-Move that V1!

I own a V1, and couldn't be more pleased. Last year, I had an opportunity to run it alongside a top-dollar K40, and the V1 spanked it in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and ease-of-use (love the arrows). Hands down the best.

GSXR: as I understand it, the tint at the top of the windshields of our cars hamper the V1's sensitivity. I run mine in the same vicinity, it's just a bit lower and to the driver's side of the mirror (and I feel it's more inline with my line of sight down the road). FWIW.
