Starting problem
Ok, so my mom drives a 1997 C280. She NEVER drives it. After commuting an 82 mile drive one way 5 days a week for 2 years, shes retired from driving as much as possible. She now bikes and uses the bus now that she works in town. The car has accumulated 174K miles, and it doesnt look more than a week old. Its in AMAZING cosmetic shape, being throughly detailed once a month since new.
It sits in the garage, and I usually make it home once a week to fire it up and take it out. I dropped by the house this morning, and went straight to the garage. I turned the key, and the starter engaged, but the engine didnt fire. No instrument cluster warning lights are staying on, and the car had been driving fine since I can remember. The last time I took it out there seemd to be a minor loss in power, but I figured it was from sitting most of the time for much of its life. The car has been regularly serviced, and averages about 6-10 K miles a year in trips. After I tried 2 times, there was a gas fume smell eminating from the car. Any ideas of whats up???

Maybe check the battery? Perhaps there isnt enough juice to fire it up?
