Lee,

I bet you have one of these things...do they work? Can we use them to test out the effectiveness of performance engine and suspension mods?

Anyone have experience with one of these $139 gizmo's

I've seen the ad on TV; here is their web site http://www.gtechpro.com/

Amazing that it can do all that it does for $139. Still not sure how it (accelerometer) works.

Eric/Robert,
Yup, we do have a G-Tech Pro that we've used to test various vehicles. The only downside is that you frequently have a tough time finding the roads/location to test out the car once you have the G-Tech ready. Let's just say that 1/4 mile runs in the 13.6@107.1 (500E under 73 degrees) is something the law may frown upon. O-60 is a bit easier (5.3 during the aforementioned run). 60-0 braking is good if you can find level pavement in good shape and nobody is behind you. (think rear-ender given benz brakes) A flat/empty parking lot should be good for the lateral G' testing.

They are quite accurate and easy to use once you get used to the controls on the little module. Since the Gtech measures your times from the moment you start (not the moment the clock starts on say...a dragstrip) R.T. isn't a factor and it is telling just what the car is capable of. For the detailed technical explanation of how they work just look at the FAQ on the G-Tech website. In all future featured car reviews we plan to include G-tech testing data. You can use these things to give you objective performance information. They are far more accurate than the ole "butt dyno". They could easily tell you what mods/tuning works, how well it works, etc. You will notice that driver variance, road conditions, and mostly ambient conditions affect performance a bunch. Just be careful when testing the 1/4 mile runs... I suppose if there was enough interest we could feature the use/results of the G-Tech in action. (okay, I'm just looking for an excuse to drive...j/k) The G-tech could be the most valuable tuning tool if you plan on doing significant tuning on your own.

Hope this helps...Lee

Cool...I am going to order one.

Lee, do you think the G-Tech could show performance gains as minute as those from say changing the air filter to a K&N or installing a chip? Maybe we could do a before and after test witha chip?

Eric,
It depends. The K&N's only help performance when there is any real restriction or shortage of airflow in a particular chassis/engine application. If you put in the K&N's, ran it, put in the OEM filter, ran it, in a back to back manner a difference may show up if there is actually a performance gain. In acceleration mode it tells you 0-60, 1/4 mile ET, and 1/4 mile trap speed. You can then stand on the brakes and it will tell you 60-0. (it knows when you are at 60mph and then starts timing till stopped.) The G-Tech itself is quite precise, if there is a gain it will tell you about it. As far as a MercedesShop "chip" test. Still have not found anyone who really comes accross as a good chip tuner for our cars. Jim Conforti would be if he got into it but that now seems unlikely. Let us know how end up liking the G-tech (and of course how well your car runs)

Hope this helps...Lee
