RA1s cost $$$$...i got a pair of used T1-S for my track set. hopefully i can use those tires cuz the tread is right on the wear marks...makes a good set of slicks. lol. as for pads...i'll keep my PBRs and see how they hold up again cuz i wasnt really pushin all that hard the last time.

I have a complete E420 brake uprgade kit for sale that will bolt up to a standard W201. The 4-piston calipers have been painted red with G2 two-part epoxy/paint, new OE dealer rotors, Textar yellow-box pads. Never installed. I haven't advertised it yet, just hadn't had time... this should cure your fade problem though!

The stock 190E brakes are pretty small. The 16v are bigger, they have 284x22 up front with a single-piston floating caliper; the E420 fronts are 294x25 with a 4-piston fixed caliper. The 16v rears are 258x9 solid, the E420 rears are 274x24 vented.

I am NOT sure if the E420 brakes will bolt up to the 190E-16 or not, it depends on the clearnace between the rear of the rotor and the lower control arm ball-joint support. It fits non-16v models perfectly.

BTW - if you can stomach the cost, the Porterfield R4-S pads are fantastic for street use. Don't use them on the track, swap out for the R4 compound or you'll fry the R4-S pads. And don't use R4 on the street either! I talked with Porterfield tech support (nice folks), they'll answer all your questions on the phone, very helpful & knowledgable people there. The Textar yellow-box pads are supposed to be the best compromise between performance and power, but they are kinda dusty. The Jurids you have now are OE and not, IMO, designed for hard use.

does anyone have a reccomendation for an online retailer with good prices on some of these pads everyone has listed? a number of them sound like they would fit my needs. price will be a factor in which pads i end up using.

thanks,

jason

Cheapest place to get Porterfield pads is direct from Porterfield:

http://www.porterfield-brakes.com

I think they're down to $110/pair up front, which is a lot less than they used to be ($139?). I think you need number AP-423 for the 284x22 fronts.

For the front 2 calipers, new OE rotors, and new pads, I'd like to get $400 with free shipping in the USA. The calipers are from a 1994 E420 with 75kmi, IIRC. They have been meticulously cleaned & painted red with G2 caliper paint. I think it took me like 3-4 hours to clean & prep them and another 2-3 hours to paint them (two coats)... believe me, I was ticked off when I found out they wouldn't fit my car!

I'm not sure if I want to sell the rears or not. I may use them - I need to check and see if my 500E rotors will fit, if so, I may use those and sell the E420 rears. If someone wants the rear stuff in addition to the front, let me know and I'll measure my 500E stuff this weekend and see if it fits. I definitely want to sell the front setup since it won't fit the older 124's, including my diesel... They're not doing me any good sitting around!

Here's a lousy photo of the calipers:

I can take better photos of the parts if you'd like. You'll use the hoses on your car, I used the old ones to hang the calipers while painting so they can't be re-used (you wouldn't want to anyway - new ones are under $10 each and should be replaced every 10 years or so!)

Ric, 2phast, has the entire 400E/E420 (124.034) brake set up all the way around his car.

http://www.2phast.com/190E/default.htm

I believe he cut the dust shields, but that was all. I believe he was very happy, you could email him, he is a member here.

If your brakes "smell" after your track run, then most likely you've stepped outside of the temperature range of your current brake pads.

In short, get track pads and use them ONLY on the track.
