Talking W124 V8 wagons?

I fear that there are no W124 V8 wagons.

Hmmm, a few strokes of my plasma torch and a few thousand hours of painstaking toil, and I suppose I could have an E420T or E400T in the driveway. I know enough not to try the E500!

Anybody else have my disease? I want a wagon that hauls butt. Here in yurrup we can still drive f-f-f-fast on the freeways. Germany still has no limit on about half of the freeway system, and Italy just raised their limit back up to 150kph (94mph).

hhmm 94mph...

Anyway,

I am not sure if the 400E had the widened transmission tunnel like the 500E, I wouldn't think so...

in that case, I suppose if you could find a rear ended E420 or 400E you could put the whole front of the car

me.. I fancy a 400CE or E420 Coupe in Black/Saddle, Silver/Black, or Blue/blue

ah... stuff that dreams are made of hehe

I would think on you side of the pond you can find a W124 6.0L M117 V8 wagon.

There are at least two of them that I know of in USA.

A M119 shoe-horned in a W124 wagon would be very labor extensive.

Personally, I would go for a 400E converted to a wagon like Holson said.

There should also be W210 V8 wagons as well in Europe.

Let the torch and "sawzall" begin. . .

The problem with Audis for me is twofold:
  • 1. I am very tall and have never tried on on Auchi that fit me.
    2. They're not Mercedes Benzes.

That would be me.

C36 power-train; 500E brakes; SportLine suspension in a W124 wagon.

I basically copied the E36T AMG.

I was in Miami a few months ago and saw a E500 4-matic Wagon. Black on tan w/ an 75yr old driver who had no idea why I was drooling on my window. Man I would love to give that V-8 everything w/ that 4-matic kicking in all the corners! Can you imagine it in the snow!?!?!? Absolutely beutiful car.
As far as the w124 I know they did make an AMG stick shift wagon, but I don't remember if it had a V-8.....somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember that there was some kind V-8 released at some point...have to check my books....I think they made a few w123 V-8's too...hmmm

Half price sale...

Hi Neil and fellow rodders,

Reno, you can have my W124 M117 16V for half the original $99,500 price..shipping to France included.

All kidding aside, I've been "off-site" for a bit; thanks Neil for bringing me back with your response to my thread about the intake hoses. I took care of this by wedging the hoses in at the side of the headlights..will try the M119s "headlight box" solution one day soon.

Owning one of the few W124 V8 wagons, all I can say is MB should have built a 500TE...great chasis, blows by speed traps unnoticed and shocks the heck out of Vette owners every time I have it out.

To the educated ear it's obviously a V8 when you hear it rumble.

Velcome back, herr Dave,

Is your car the vehicle that Car & Driver reviewed in the early 90s? I bet you fixed that idle problem long ago.

I see that you have an HDJ80 in the stable too. It's on my list of 4x4s to buy when I fine a clean rust-free example. There are very few in France.

I don't see what could be so hard about sourcing a 560 engine/trans, dropping it in a nice used W124 wagon, and grafting in stronger front springs and brakes. A bigger radiator would complete the package. Here in Yurrup, the stock 560 makes about 300hp. A better exhaust, ignition, and air filter should give about 320. :p

Speaking of which, I recently located a 928S (2v) engine complete with the necessary adaptors to mount it in my Range Rover. But the finance minister (wife) is already a bit peevish about my expensive manual->auto conversion. I slipped in a winch, new radiator, etc under the same budget line item.

Reno- you're correct it's no "big" deal, it's just a big deal to do it right and make sure all ancillary functions continue to work (e.g., cruise control) and can still be serviced & diagnosed at any Mercedes dealer.

FWIW, before I did the C36 powertrain swap into the W124 wagon (I went from CIS to HFM, a PITA!), I contemplated doing a M117 5.6L or 6.2L swap. I had a quote from a former employee of AMG/Chicago (Scott) for about $13-15K to do the conversion.

I was ready to move in this direction until I heard Scott was found murdered, and he had taken deposits but produced no cars.

Exclamation rear subframe mods

My understanding is that it's not as easy as a "drop in." AMG had to modify the rear subframe in the 124 cars to make the longer 560 differential fit. You can see in the restoration pictures they basically cut the subframe in the center and created a triangular bracing around the rear of the diff.

One of those "don't try this at home" tricks.

As far as the motor drop in you can see the new motor mounts and frame in the photo; despite the modifications the car still rocks a bit side to side if you run the revs up at standstill.

Reno, this is almost certainly the C&D car, down to the same Alpine CD still in the dash and the MB history from Westmont, IL. (I redid the grill recently in the original black). It doesn’t really idle like a Cummins diesel anymore, but it sure pulls like one.

The 90’s era Land Bruiser is one of the best models they built from a combo of ability and refinement. The new ones are too Lexus-cushy and way more complex (DOHC V8, electrics..) and the in-line six is bulletproof. It had better be for the amount of gas it burns; in Europe you fortunately have the turbo diesel option.

Hammerwagon,

I tried clicking on your link for photo's of your AMG wagon, and it doesn't work.

I get the following message:

Please sign in and try again or check with the owner of the file.

I signed into my Yahoo account, and I still get the same message...
