I've just mounted 17" x 8.5" AMG 5 Spoke "Sport" wheels on my '92 500E, and I'd like to report that all is quite well in Blitzen-Land. Whereas when I upgraded my 300TE to a 16 X 7.5 fitment the car charged a considerable price in ride harshness in return for the improved handling; not so the 500E.

The car was made for this size wheel, if not even more. I stayed away from a staggered setup because I wanted to be able to rotate the tires (the rears seem to keep feathering at the edges; I can't explain it) and this was the widest I dared to go. I'm really overwhelmed by the handling improvement, though. And the icing on the cake is that I think the ride has not suffered one bit.

Just thought I'd post this, in case any of my fellow 500E owners are on the fence on this issue. Switch to macaroni and cheese if you have to, but do the upgrade if you can.

Happy Holidays!!

Can you tell us which brand and size tires you had fitted? I have been considering the AMG 5 spokes myself...would it be possible to send a picture, too? Thanks very much.

Eric

Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 in 245/45ZR-17. So far seems like a fabulous tire; excellent wet and dry traction. They do a great job of keeping the ASR at bay. I chose these over the Pilot Sport for the reason of longevity...the Sport has a reputation of burning up fairly quickly.

I'm taking pictures today and will pass one along. Good luck with your decision!

Sounds like a pretty good choice; I've been contemplating this as well (smoke silver with powder painted black five spokes), and this will probably put me over the edge.
