Don't beat yourself up over this, Stretch. Even the pros make mistakes.

My neighbor is a team leader at one of the Mercedes dealers in Southern California, and he made a mistake on rebuilding a recent model Mercedes that caused the engine to be ruined. The dealership ate the cost of a new motor.

Thanks Paul. I'll cheer up in a bit.

Good. Sometimes, it's all about the stories anyway, isn't?

Update - I've got a replacement head for one hundred euros from a relatively reliable source so hopefully it will be good. I've arranged to pick it up on the way back to Holland. Now all I've got to do is find a new camshaft and a replacement new rocker arm...

I forgot to say I got a replacement cam too and the first rocker arm "saddle" assembly so for the head I'm on my way to a solution.

Got the engine out

I must have been absolutely knackered when I started this morning. It seemed like every nut and bolt was fighting me today but I got the bloody engine out.

New load balancer hasp died and the engine nearly dropped - which was fun - effing cheap junk...

=> Still only a few scratches (and none on me!) <=

If I have the energy I'll do a new thread for this engine removal - probably entitled "when virtually everything that can go wrong goes wrong"...

Picture shows engine coming out just before the hasp went south - VIN plate on the front upper cross member caught the engine for me though. You can always rely on a VIN plate...

Jackpot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lucky me!

Camshaft gets nadgered and engine stops suddenly - guess how many piston crowns got damaged?

I got all four of them in one go - jackpot!

So I wonder how much M102 pistons cost.

Head gasket leak evidence ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Fault - corrosion I'd say

Some good news though - just look at the cross hatching on the cylinder walls! Not bad for an engine with 100,000 miles on it.

You sure did hit the jackpot. Go out and buy a lottery ticket. It's your lucky day.

I would believe they would cost quite a lot for genuine KS items - might as well find a used set.

Oh... I got the sick feeling in my stomach getting updated in this thread and reading bolded "DO NOT DO THIS" edits... it's amazing how one minute of carelessness can ruin 10 hours of careful work.

Yep - that's the way it goes sometimes.

This was the car I didn't want to take to bits - now look at it!!!

I think you're right. So far I've found a price for about 500 euros for four pistons. That's not going to happen. I'll pop out the pistons today and see if a second hand set can be found.

Nearly thwated by my negativity!

Somewhere high above me - someone's smiling again...

...took off the sump...

...took out the pistons...

...started to clean up the piston crowns...

Those tear drop dents are meant to be there - after a hard day struggling to get the engine out I was ready to expect the worst.

So it doesn't look like I'm winning the lottery after all. I've never been so happy not winning the lottery before!

Although the design is a bit different here's confirmation that the piston crown is designed that way

Only piston #3 got it.

Slight damage here =>

{on the opposite side of the tear drop shape}

To replace or not to replace?

I wondered what you had been up to. You've been busy I see.

Have you considered giving up on automobiles and getting a horse?

I'd probably replace the one piston and re-ring the rest.

Your trials with the M104 are making me re-think slipping a M104 into my W114 coupe. Seems the head gasket failure is a way too common occurrence with the power plant.
