What about the worm drive at the other end?

On the subject on OEM replacement parts, I did have a problem with Vaico fuel pre-filter.

This is the second time with the same part, on the initial order I thought the supplier had switched for another un-branded part instead of Vaico.

Given they are fairly cheap I ordered another one as a spare together with a genuine MB pre-filter for comparison, too big but I did pull the filter part off to put on another genuine MB filer head (if that makes sense).

I did this with ATF filters and tbh, you couldn't tell them apart.

That was a long winded way of saying it could be a dodgy cable.

It could indeed be a dodgy cable.

I've been scouring the internet trying to find a reasonable replacement. I'm planning to use the slightly longer W124 cable next time - dealer looks like the best price here in Holland.

(As always with this effing car - to be continued)

I don't think you would have half these problems if you shoe horned a V12 M102 in there, stick a roller skate under the sump and your good to go

Joking aside, cracking conversion, looking forward to the final result.

M102? I've got a M102 in there already - I think you highlight the problem with this car: So close and yet so far - all the same numbers - put in a different order (M120) and it might have been so much more cooperative...

Be careful with the cable alignment, stretching and and excessive bends...this will also cause needle judder...it has to be just right.

Yep - I plan to buy a slightly longer W124 version to give me just that extra bit of wiggle space. The M102 engined W124s have the same fittings (from what I can tell) but need a cable that is 2cm longer. Hopefully that'll be enough.

Update:

Despite sailing through the safety test (APK) this year, teddy has been chucked out the cot and I've registered the vehicle as not in use to save the road tax.

The plan is to rebuild the 717.412 gearbox with new bearings this time and put in a new 5th gear synchromesh. Then I'm going to try and get that effing differential fixed properly for the final time. I'm convinced the problem with these smaller differentials is that the casings are not rigid enough so I'm going to get welding and put some external ribs on the casing to stop the stupid thing from expanding and throwing the bearing pre-load on the axial bearings out of whack. There's also a tiny bit of a rust issue near to the driver's side jacking point that needs to be addressed.

So anyway - stupid thing is out of use for now and the plan is to get all of the niggles done once and for all.

(Wish me luck - this is above and beyond...)

I forgot to update before

The work listed in the post above got done - the 717.430 gearbox got swapped for the re-sorted 717.412

I've only got a few pictures of the 717.412 in bits - all much of a muchness - they all look like this =>

!

To be honest as this happened last year I've forgotten the salient points of what I was doing so there's little benefit in adding more pictures now...

...this car is now back to being in working condition. The only problem the car has is me! I've been a bit to ill to drive it recently so it has been sitting in the back of the workshop under a car cover.

The plan now is to get my W123 in the place of this one so I can work on it (the W123 needs one heck of a lot of help) and to put the W201 in long term storage until either the prices of second hand W201s rise or I get better enough to be driving again.

Still thinking of this car even though it doesn't get used much

For example in the summer I finally found some proper W201 alloy wheels to do up

201 400 13 02

They are in really good condition - minimal scrapes - but they do need a repaint.

The thing about these W201 versions is that they are not only the correct size 15 inch - 7J15H2

but they have the correct offset too

ET 44

These wheels are getting hard and harder to find. Especially one that haven't be curbed. So I was glad to pay a very very reasonable price. The seller even arranged delivery.

The tyres on the W201 are now getting a bit long in the tooth despite the amount of tread so the plan is to paint up these alloys and get new tyres before I recommission the car.

Getting ready for longer-term storage

Today I bought some fuel stabaliser and got the car ready for the tow truck tomorrow.

Despite sitting for the best part of a year since it was last started it started right up. No problems - it is being a good little baby benz at the moment...

To get it to the back of the workshop I bought four dollies - they are quite good - makes it easy to shift about if only the floor was a bit smoother. There are a few pot holes that cause trouble - but hey such is life...

Despite not being the most practical colour 199 is lovely when it is clean and shiny - nice contrast with the crappy building where I rent some space eh?

The fire truck in the background is someone else's project - I have asked the owner if I can post a few pictures of it here cos a lot of you are probably gonna be interested - the man from del monte he say yes...

I've discovered Car System anti-scratch 2 component low VOC

Fairly tough stuff - I'm going to give it a go on the wheels and see

Going to opt for low dust pads for next change, not sure of brand but remember seeing 'green stuff' get mentioned on other MB forums.

I'm not sure if us Europeans can get hold of them though

If you do get some I'll be interested to hear what you think
