Who would have thought it?

Time for another video!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSFXxTav6Jo&feature=youtu.be

It runs and chugs and it doesn't like to switch from the cold running cycle to the warm...

...and changing the position of the distributor seems to make no difference to the running - so I guess some vacuum stuff is going on that I don't understand...

...and the timing light suggests about 12 degrees BTDC =>

So I've got a bit of reading to do.

It isn't very stable running just yet but it does get warm and it most certainly wants to live.

Well I'm not sure about that!

Today I'm going to see if I can do a compression test to see if the mechanical side is producing the same pressures on each cylinder before I go zooming off looking at electrickery related trouble.

(I really don't wanna do electrickery - Luddites of the world unite and ban this unearthly stuff etc!)

Could it be this easy?

From left to right plug #1 ... plug #4

Couldn't do a compression test (probably won't need to now of course) because despite all the connectors in the boxes...

...the "diesel only" gauge won't connect to an adapter for a spark plug hole.

It is almost like it was intended to be that way (so you have to buy a "petrol only" gauge)

One bust HT lead in a brand new set from Bosch.

Pain in the arse - replacements not available in two places locally because they don't stock "specialist parts"!

Went to the dealer - new part - one lead costs 40 euros

Went next door and found a Bosch part that might fit - 21 euros

Bloody hell - I'm going to attack the new broken one with a knife to see where the connection is bust.

Have you broken in the new engine yet? I imaging it will take some running to get it settled down.

For the compression test, you should be able to use regular old airline with barbed fittings and clamps-the engine won't produce more than 250psi?

Broken in the engine? Nope - I don't want to go past 2000 rpm whilst it shakes like it does at the moment. #3 HT lead is buggered so I need to get a new first before I start using the engine as it should be...

Were you able to get results out of that leak down tester? On the left? I have both those same tools, and my leak down has never gone over 10 psi, and showed massive loss on a cylinder with really high compression.

Yes - it works - cheap crap but it does work. I mean I know it isn't NASA calibrated super Gucci but it gives consistently repeatable results.

I do think, however, there's more to be learnt from listening to the sound coming out of certain parts of the engine and comparing that across the cylinders.

That's what I ended up doing. To fit that thing to my diesel I found an air fitting the fit the glow plug. A fuel line. And another fitting. I'm wondering if I had the piston up at the top. I'll try again. On a cylinder with 400 lbs compression it showed a 60% loss.

I was laughing at your pic of both kits cause I know how long you sat there combing different pieces to get them to fit. lol. I was doing leak down on a diesel and never found the combo either.

Ok hijack over with. Best of luck.

Not considered to me to be hijacking. I am after all the self proclaimed king of not sticking to the point.
