I jacked up the passenger's-side rear wheel with the factory jack, leaving the all three other wheels with definite ground contact. When in P, the pawl appears to lock the output shaft. When I put it into P and start to turn the wheel, I hear a click from the area, and the wheel is reduced to <5° of movement. When in R, N, D, S, or L, the wheel has about 30° to 40° of movement but hits definite stops at each end of its movement arc.

So basically, I've confirmed that it does appear to be coming in and out of P, and I have no idea what stops it is hitting when out of P and if those are normal or not.

Well, after being sidelined for a while due to general busyness, this car is on track for work this May.

I'm quoting my earlier posts because I think they contain a clue to the answer to the issues I've been having. This winter, I tried to move the car in the driveway, but I couldn't budge it even by pushing it with the 240D (US bumpers FTW). Then I jacked up the passenger's-side rear wheel and tried to rotate it. It has maybe an inch or two of freeplay, but refuses to budge -- exactly as if it were locked in Park, even though the shifter is in Drive. Since I know that the shifter linkage works (tested it before), I'm guessing that I misassembled something in the transmission when I put the valve body back in. Hopefully it's a relatively simple fix. I'll report back May 6th or 7th -- my last final is on the 5th. Wish me luck!

Also, this thread was the very last one in this forum for a while . A dubious honor:
