Well I got a email with a request to post here, so here it goes. I have been working on and off on this truck for about 4 years now. I decided to just finish it, and stop doing everybody else's truck. So I have been working as much as I can the past few months and hope to have it done by this fall. If you go to my web site here Diesel Unimog New & Used Parts & Vehicles | VonsMog and go to the "Current projects" pages you can see more photos and I have been updating as I go along.

Once the cab was in primer, (where it is now, still have to decide on a color) I went after the chassis. After tear down, the frame was stripped of paint, then sandblasted. As was the axle housing, and all new gearing, bearings and seals installed, changing the gearing to 4.93/1. Which should give a top speed of 80MPH. Not that I want to go that fast, but to be able to travel at 65MPH and only be turning 2500RPM's. The motor is a OM352A with only one hour of run time on it, what was in a snowblower powerpack that never sold. When I got it the paint was still on the turbo and exhaust manifold! The transmission is a factory rebuilt 16 speed out of one of the military SEE trucks. These transmissions have a 22% underdrive that is air activated by the shiftknob. With a larger turbo and intercooler, we estimate the HP to be about 225-240, which is 100 more than stock! Many parts are new, and if not they are rebuilt. Every little bracket is beadblasted, primed and repainted and new hardware is used to install. The headers are custom made here in shop, as is the exhaust system. Just about done with the chassis and will test fit the cab to make sure everything fits and install the intercooler and AC.

Painted a few thing for the truck today. Stripped the fuel tank and then sandblasted, acid etched, tank sealer, epoxy primer and paint. Everything else got sandblasted, primed and painted with the same satin black 2k paint. Got to move the chassis outside now that its on tires to make it easier to move around.

This is beautiful work you are doing.

I am surprised to see the angle at which the engine and transmission is fitted to the chassis on these things (er sorry Unimogs) do they suffer from leaky rear seals more than they do at the front?

...how do they stay cool like that?

And exhaust...

...six cylinder diesel =>

...goes into some sort of box that then has four outlet pipes =>

...why they do that then?

And whats the big wrapped piped thing on the right lower corner of the picture above?

No more rear seal leaks than any other motor. The oil pan holds three gallons of oil! and the crank is well below the oil level.
Disc brakes were an option, it has four calipers up front, two per wheel and the back brakes have the parking brake built right into the calipers.
Those are a set of rims I cut down to roll the chassis around on, but they were doing a number on the driveway, so I mounted up a set of low profile tires on another set of rims I had. The cut down rims will be good for loading a truck into a container as you have to take the rims and tires off to get a truck into one.
The motor is a 5.7L six cyl. diesel and I had to move the turbo in order to fit everything under the cab. So I custom make the headers and move the turbo down to the side where there is room for everything. The wrapping is over the headers and exhaust to keep the heat away for the cab floor.

Got the chassis all done, and now started working on the cab. My buddy made laser cut a new custom grill for me out of 1/8" steel, since the grill is structural to the cab. So I cut out the old and in with the new.

Put the cab on the chassis to check for clearance of the turbo and fit the water/air intercooler and AC.
