OM617 Rebuild ?
 

A few years back I bought 84 300d that was rusted out and would no longer pass inspection due to frame rot. I pulled the engine and trans and they have been sitting on a cart in my garage ever since. There is about 167k on the odometer when pulled.
My plan is to seperate the two this winter and get the motor up on a stand and clean it up. Ultimatley I would like to use this engine in some sort of build. It ran pretty well when pulled.
So my main question here is this. While the engine is pulled, is there any kind of service items I should be looking at? Suggestions? Thanks

In my experience, if you were to clean the engine well, adjust the valves, change the oil and all the filters, make sure the banjo bolts are clean and the alda is properly adjusted, this engine would run fine basically forever, assuming regular maintenance (valves, oil, filters done regularly). There shouldn't be any need to rebuild the engine now or anytime, really, unless it gets damaged by overheating or something like that.

At 167k you're probably still fine on all wear items.

If you want to refresh it install a new "waffle style" oil filter gasket, timing tensioner spring/gasket, new timing chain guides, and a new timing chain.

If you pull the balancer in the front to install a new front main, buy new Mercedes brand bolts for the balancer they go bad. Check your vacuum pump bearings, and the injection pump bushing play.

Don't mess with the rear main(unless it leaks)-you need to pull the crank to replace it.
