w111 coupe wood replacement piece

After unsuccessfully looking for a long time for a replacement for the small triangular bit of wood at the far edge of my w111 coupe dashboard, I decided it was time for drastic action: I'd have to try to fabricate something. I have no real experience bending wood, and seeing how these panels are formed (with some very sharp creases) I thought I'd try using another material as a base.

I ended up taking what was left of the old piece out, then traced it and scanned the tracing. From there I built a cad file and used a laser cutter to cut out the "flattened" version. I ended up cutting several as I knew I'd probably make a mistake somewhere and have to start over!
Once the plastic was cut, I made up a little double clamp to hold everything in place. using a heat gun, I softened the acrylic just enough to make the needed bends. I started with the sharp crease, then I proceeded to the more gentle sloping curve shape. I checked fit on the car and it looked good.. Now, after having the veneer glued on, staining and finishing will follow. Overall I'm happy with what I am seeing so far.. the original piece was basically reduced to flakes.

I'll post an update when it's all put back together.
