79 240d commuter build/maintain

Hi all,

It's been a little while since I've owned a w123, but I'm back at it. I bought this little 240 to use for driving to work in place of a van project that I've been working on turning into a sportsmobile.

It has a few issues but overall is working out really well. Unfortunately it wasn't as clean as the seller stated, but as I've found problems I've also found opportunities to learn more about the car.

First problem.....no parking brake!!

Easy enough, bought some new shoes and installed them.

Next, it looked as though it had original injectors. While the odometer works intermittently, it's currently showing a little over 103k miles. I have to dig in there to fix it so that it works all the time. But back to the injectors, they looked old so I sourced some Bosch replacements and installed them along with new fuel lines.

Next I found a new shift boot to replace the old worn out one. I also wanted to take a peak at the reverse light switch.

I cleaned the protective coating off and installed the new boot.

Next I replaced the original leaky prime pump with a new Bosch unit.

So far the leaks are all gone. It didn't smoke before, and still doesn't so that's nice.

It's a manual trans, manual everything car. After owning a couple wagons I wanted as simple a w123 as I could find. It also does not have an oil cooler, so there's another thing not to worry about.

The interior is in decent condition. The drivers seat back has been replaced with the wrong style of fabric. I will try to find interior that matches at some point.

It has h4 type headlights, so the lighting is decent.

To dos......

The point of this thread is to document what I do so that I have a record but also so that you can give your input if you want.

Next on my list is to flush out the coolant and add Mercedes approved diesel coolant, as well as replace the radiator hoses. I have the parts just need to make time. Also an oil change, don't know how old the oil is. On that note, after a tank of fuel through it I haven't noticed any oil level drop so that good.

It needs the fuel tank flushed out so that will be a little project, but I will carry some extra filters and monitor it as I get used to it. At some point when I have time I will tackle that.

It needs new shocks and springs on all 4 corners, as well as sourcing some decent bundt wheels. The rear end hangs a little low and I like how these cars handle when they are set up like new.

I need to find some seat adjustment handles.

Rear defrost does not work, I hear it click when I press the button and the light comes on, but does not defrost.

I'd like to weld up a 2" hitch mount for my bike rack.

Last but not least, it was rear ended lightly at some point. I want to see if I can get pdr done on the rear fenders to take out two small wrinkles. We will see.

Star

Nice. But I'll include a suggestion for you. You need to get a star on that hood.
