1970 280S "Die grüne Hornisse"
Hey look, a build thread!
So I rescued this beauty, a 1970 280S. She's unmolested, but the carbs are not so good. Let's get her in the shop and see what we got! |

Few hours in the shop, today. Pretty cold. Still cleaning. I love the color of this car, but I wish that whoever painted it would have finished the job. At least she's a good 20 footer. The distant future holds a blast/repair/repaint in this nice spruce green.
I'm looking for some recommendations: Is there any reason I should keep the Zenith carbs on here? I can rebuild them, but I'm leaning toward a Weber conversion. At this point in time, I'm wanting a fun daily driver that I don't have to put too much into...for now. That being said, I'm perfectly willing to save up for fresh Webers, I can always rebuild the Zeniths and try to make a purist happy/recoup a little. Someday land holds a freshly rebuilt MFI 2.8 with a supercharger...maybe. Additionally, I'm planning on replacing most, if not all of the suspension consumables. I'm not experienced in the swing axle driving method, but I'm hoping that fresh squishy bits, new springs, and some Bilstein HDs will mitigate the worst of the shenanigans. Not looking to try to turn this into a canyon carver, but a nice, fun cruiser, with plenty of zip. Any tips?

Today's round of cleaning was spent in the engine bay. Fair amount of grime, some surprisingly light surface rust. Aside from being a "two-tone" she's in pretty good shape. The cylinder head was suspiciously clean compared to the rest of the engine...new-ish head, perhaps? The valve cover gasket has seen better days, but underneath things look great except for a little brown on the top of the cam...I'm guessing she sat for a bit.
