OM617 looking for rebuild help in Cape Town
My 1980 300d needs a rebuild/overhaul.
The odometer reading is 440,000km Car was recently taken to have restoration work, then injector pump servicing. When it came back and I opened the valve cover, I discovered that the high lift cam had been "replaced" by a normal cam, the cam turrets changed for lower spec ones and also the correct head had been "exchanged" for a marine spec head. The diesel "specialist" who I gave the job to did a compression test which verified that cylinder number 2 had very low compression. The car is definitely has much less power. After feeling very ripped-off, I would like to enlist the help of someone who has some free time on their hands and has high standards of workmanship. If you have rebuilt one of these old engines before that would give me some peace of mind. Head only needs to have chain split before it can be removed. I´m interested in adding a K24 turbo when it goes back into the car. I need some help getting a few things done so that it will pass roadworthy testing. You can email me on apehearted(at)gmail.com |

Hi,
A local precision engineering firm quoted me about R40,000 over the phone. That equates to $2,857. I don´t see the point in going for a used low mileage engine, because it would mean ending up with a different engine sump/base (lower block) number on my certificate of registration. If I come to sell the car eventually, it will be bound to fetch a lower price than if it keeps its original engine number. I´m an economist but in my blood-line is a machinst, so I know I can do the job, but I lack experience. What makes me a little nervous is that the US tool rental program is not in effect here. That means I might have to scrounge some tools or have some made up if I need them. Not sure what I will be able to have to do about that. If you would like to come out to Cape Town for a short vacation with your special tools and help, you would be welcome to stay with me. I´m 47, also sober for many years. Did a brief stint on a 100ft yacht as deck crew. |
