Completed re-routing the transmission lines today. Reinstalled the subframe, all fits really well. Tomorrow I will remove the exhaust system and align the drive shaft. I also got new wrap for the exhaust. This time I got new Titanium wrap. Supposedly it will last longer. I did notice a problem that I need to address. The the transmission cooling lines are supposed to be cooling lines so running near the exhaust as they do in the last picture is something I will be addressing in the future. I was able to order all the MB type fittings I need to make Mercedes like lines. Bellmetric sells all the braze on fittings to make factory like lines.

Pile of parts ready for powder coating. Drive shaft alignment is as good as can be without putting weight on wheels. I also removed the exhaust wrap because it was bad and falling apart. I didn't realize I needed a hazmat suite and respirator to take that off. It's worse than installing home insulation. Hopefully I can get the exhaust 3D scanned so I can make a cad model of it. You can see in the picture where the exhaust was hitting the chassis on the long pipe second to the right. Hopefully dropping the engine down 1/4" from where it was will stop that.

Spent a day getting my exhaust 3D scanned. I didn't realize how much was involved. I was with the scanner for 6 hr. I also didn't realize how much it cost $461.25. These things are not just scan over and run.

While I wait for my subframe I am cleaning up a few loose ends. Last year when I was going my AC system I found a bad wire harness and was able to thread all new wires down the old R129 sheathing to replace the older biodegradable R129 wires. All except for 1 wire that didn't need to be replaced because it was obviously silicone. I was wondering why MB decided to make that one wire out of silicone but with the subframe out I could see why. HEET, The corrugated plastic sheathing melted away and was now allowing the wires to chaff on the steel clamp. No damage done except for the sheath but something I definitely needed to address. I looked up various plastic sheathing at Mcmaster-Carr and found that most of the sheathing that looks like that is rated for 250°F. I had no idea that it got so hot in that area. And this wiring was not my doing but routed exactly as it is on the R129. Perhaps the 129 has more room to breath. In any case, I was able to replace the sheathing with a nylon expandable sleeve rated at 1000°F.That outa take care of it.
Now to work on the other issue in close proximity of my exhaust. The transmission cooling lines. Unfortunately I really cant fit those until I get my subframe back but I will take my best guess at it. It turns out that my friends at Belmetric sell all of the MB type special solder on fittings required to make factory like lines and Mcmaster sells the 10mm zinc plated tube.

Working all day with a new CAD system. What I could normally do in an hour took me about 16hr today. So all I have to show for todays many hours is one small simple pipe completely reverse engineered. The hard part was getting used to the software so hopefully the other 5 pipes will go smoother. First picture shows the pipe. The second picture shows the pipe with the scanned mesh overlaid.

Pipe number 2 done today. I spent all day on this one as well but this one is the most complex pipe I have. The others should go a lot faster but they are really big files and Solidworks complains about lack of memory. They do load but not sure if it will crash after I screw around with them. I still suck with this but definitely getting better.

Guess what just came in today. Powder coating is all done. Now I just wish I could do all the rest of the front end components. Still a lot of work to do. I have been pulling stumps out of the yard the past couple of days, so work on the car was on hold. Still working on the transmission cooling lines. I need to apply the cavity wax to the inside of the subframe. I need to re-wrap the exhaust. Then once I install the subframe with all the rest of the front end components and get weight on wheels, I can check drive shaft alignment and reinstall the exhaust. The gloss black looks real nice and I believe it will be easier to clean.

Transmission lines complete and installed except for the last one. Cavity wax applied and subframe is installed. The cavity wax made quite a mess. It leaks out of everywhere. then I tried to move the subframe so I could clean my table and it spilled out all over the floor. I have a big mess to clean now. Acetone takes it off and didn't hurt the powder coat. I'm going to have to get a gallon for my floor.
First picture show's the completed subframe weighing in at 64Lb. Second pictures showes the cavity wax installed. Third pictures shows the new subframe mounting nuts I replaced since I had the subframe in and about about 20 times. Fourth picture shows it installed and all torqued up. Hopefully to stay.

WOW. Weight on Wheels. Front end complete. Last transmission line is complete with paint drying. Tomorrow I align the drive shaft, wrap and install the exhaust, install the last transmission line and a few odds and ends under the hood.

Took it for a spin a few minutes ago. Hopefully I will be able to get it aligned tomorrow and ready for summer. Unfortunately I have to go to NY Sunday for a week or two.

Latest test drive. Top down all seams well after alignment. A little too early to tell but in 66°F ambient the AC seems to still be performing perfectly. A little disappointment on the trans cooling lines. The one that was too close to the exhaust is clear in the area I addressed but still too close in another area. One of the other cooling lines was fitted with the engine serpentine belt removed and with the belt installed it comes about 2mm away from the hose fitting. So those two lines will need to be re-made and I might as well re-make the third one since its really the incorrect ID tubing. The good news is that I now have the tubes defined in cad so adjustments are fairly easy.

That’s a beast of an engine! The last time I drove one of those was in a 1994 600 SEL (in 1994). The power was incredible, even in that boat. I can only imagine how much fun that is in an r107!

In it's day the SL600 enjoyed supercar status with just under 400HP. Today not quite so. But the M120 in the 560SL has what I call just the right amount of power without getting stupid. It's smooth as glass, extremely well behaved and it looks really good. Todays plastic covered engines just don't do it for me.

Took both Samson and Delilah out for a spin today. Both running beautiful in 75° weather.
So what's next. Put this subframe in this car. Then try to put this engine and transmission into this car. Engine is an M113 and transmission is a 722.6 5 speed. If this engine fits then a 470HP K113 will fit.
