1975 diesel smokin rattlin hard starting

Just changed the starter, had previously put in a new pump and it was set to 0 btdc, the book said 24 btdc, changed it to that and everything went nasty.

any suggestions??

Thanks for the reply Peter. The engine sounds like it's got "nuts and bolts" rattling around in it. There is lots of smoke and trouble starting. I just installed a new starter. I just reconfirmed...

Any info would be appreciated. I'm trying to set the diesel timing on a 1975 240D. first I had at 0 deg and not it's set 24-26 deg top dead center, but it's running very rough. I haven't been able...
