Actually, I used some heat-shielding tape to wrap the exhaust including the...

Unlikely

I have no direct experience, but it looks like a clear case to me:
As long as there is no loss of coolant there is no problem.
Engine cooling does not rely on heat radiation by the heater (if so,...

I guess you had to collapse the driveshaft to get the flex discs out? To do so, you probably loosened the big (48mm?) nut in the middle of the shaft where the front and rear halves meet.
The manual...

I think is a very good deal.
I paid 3000$ for a head job plus bearing bracket and EGR pipe. 600$ was for the machine shop, 1400 was for labor and the rest was for parts.

If the car was ok before the rear-end overhaul, I would first investigate about (1).

The manual (83-525) calls for 50ml (or 60ml when system was emptied by leak)

40ml for the evaporator and 10ml for the receiver/drier. This is for part exchanges. An extra 10ml is added when refrigerant (and some oil) was lost due to a leak. Total volume of the system is 120ml...

The service CD (aka WIS) is way much better. Alldata lacks stuff, is often not model-specific, procedures are not well explained etc.
