OK. But that doesn't mean that the master cylinder was rebuilt properly OR is functioning properly. I would remove, inspect, and confirm proper operation if you haven' done that.

According to the research I have done, typical USA Midgrade (89 Octane) is the modern equivalent fuel (in the USA) for the W108 4.5. Mine runs properly with stock timing on this fuel.

I agree it does look like chip guard, but that is no guarantee that there isn't rust under there. Easiest way to check is with a magnet to detect where & where not there is solid metal.
