I rotate the crankshaft with one hand on a ratchet wrench and the other hand feeling for the TC drain plug to line up with the access port. (That might not work for mechanics of limited stature.)

Dexron III is obsolete and unlikely to be an option. So you will have to settle for a Dexron III equivalent. I recommend Valvoline Maxlife Multi-Vehicle ATF.

That check valve is for the bypass (fine-filtered) flow, which is quite low compared to the primary filter.
Did this problem start concurrent with the last oil/filter change?

If the noise occurs with the compressor NOT engaged, the problem could be limited to the clutch bearing. Meaning that there is no contamination of the A/C system.
