Side molding question

I bought new side moldings (83 300D) and when I went to put them on using the supplied "buttons" (bullet shaped as opposed to the shorter tube shaped ones that were there) they didn't snap in firmly...

I need to replace one of the differential output seals (axle shaft seal in Hayes manual) on my 1983 300D, is the part # the same as the pinion seal? My local parts store only shows the pinion seal...

I just had my lower ball joints replaced to solve the same problem, the boot dry out and crack allowing water and grit to enter.
