check the motor first, usually the motor warps and the gear on the motor no longer makes enough contact with rails causing the grinding noise. 9 times out of 10 a new motor will resolve problem.

I have done many glow plugs in om642's and knock on wood none have broken yet. Also, i would add that i would not replace the relay unless its throwing a fault code, generally dont see them go bad...
