It may be because I burn more oil, so more of the additives got through to the exhaust. A tight engine shouldn't have a problem.

Your car probably has 4 gears. It starts in 2nd gear when in Drive. 1st gear is only activated if you floor it or shift down to low.

I'd vote for running it a tad richer to possibly compensate
for the higher combustion temperatures caused by the advanced
timing.
