Turned out to be a bad fuse. #3 in the fuse compartment on passenger side footwell.

Now my driver's seat won't engage, so it slips back and forth on the track.

You are absolutely correct. You'll have to take your sliding pieces and use them. The moulding is in left and right pieces. Get someone to help you and you can avoid scratching your paint.

Could you be a little more explicit on what you did? e.g. Did you momentarily go into "1" and then into drive before moving ahead, or did you get up to some speed in "1" before shifting...
