I have inspected the belt and there are no signs of damage. Evidently the noise is caused by the slow wear of the toothed surface, and subsequently the belt dust being deposited on the pulleys....

Well, I managed to obtain the part from my local MB dealer. It is now installed and so far, so good. It certainly looks very promising. It cost just over £40, so about $72 US, which isn't too bad....
