Sorta sounds like the problem I had recently with my trans. Check the adjustment of your Bowden cable. Mine had broken at the threaded adjuster and I guess a piece fell out allowing excessive play....

Any diesel engine is going to heat up slightly going uphill under a load, as long as its not extreme there's nothing to worry about. And it looks to me that the belts are fine.
