In the end I unbolted the 3 bolts holding the steering gear to the frame. That let me pry it out another couple inches which was enough to take the cap out, reposition the spring that had turned...

I agree on the Stabil treatment.

You can get nice jackstands at NAPA. Any will do though.

It's an M103. The break is near the spark plug...

It's an M103. The break is near the spark plug end, so maybe I can just reattach that end. The metal part is shorting out against the head.

Just the whole process, might just save myself the time and try the split boots. The fellow that has used them told me they are still working fine several years later. No issues.

Sounds like a good ton of BS. Maybe I'll try the bolt on split boots with grease. Easy to replace anytime. Carry a spare. I would just worry about balance issues/vibration.

I don't know, the edge is only a few mm, I don't think an epoxy would hold up, with the pulling on the arm rest and flexing and -40 winters.

w116 door arm rest broke

In my w116 the driver's door arm rest broke up at the top. The metal just fatigued right where the foam ends, so about 0.5" inside the chrome bezel. I wonder if there's any way to weld the two pieces...
