I got the unit out and was actually able to open it up very easily. Seems it is held together with rubber rivets and the two parts came apart with a screwdriver very nicely. Just as you described one...

Let me see if I can explain this properly.

The fan speed select switch is stuck in the low fan position and will not move either direction.
