Very strange problem. Sounds like a Fiat I had years ago that would do stuff that made no sence either. I wonder if there could have been a lot of coke build up in the cylinder head that is burning...

Just a thought but are you sure you are locking...

Just a thought but are you sure you are locking the two nuts against each other and not turning the locking nut down against the spring top? Asking because I saw a guy do this once.
