It very well could be. Also the motor could be going south and/or the gears could be full of crud.

No matter what, cleaning and lubing the rails is a must.

First thing to do is to find some Mercedes Benz sunroof lube. I have and others tried other lubes and for some reason only the MBZ works best.

Then manually open and lube the tracks. So a search...
