i could get an OBX or other nice muffler with a cool growl to it--not too obnoxious but more free-flowing than the stock muffler, and have mandrel-bent pipe welded onto the end of the stock piping...

george, why would a muffler cost you $314? why buy one from the dealer when you can buy a $40 muffler on eBay and have a muffler shop weld one in for $30-$50?
