Along the lines of not needing to make memories of well known failures, if the hole is a blind hole it pays to know how many "good" threads there are so you don't turn the tap into the bottom too...

A single, smooth movement that gets you the desired rotation is desired. But if you are timid and stop short of the full 90 there is no need to throw away the bolt and start over.
