you want tdc on the compression stroke, this means both the lobes on the camshaft for cylinder #1 must be pointing up.

you can see the numbers on the pulley, but the only (truly) accurate way to check the stretch is by using a dial indicator on one of the lifters.

this is referred to as the '2mm valve lift method'...
