I would certainly pass on the adhesive remover. You will get rid of the glue but likely do more damage to the rest of the wood. Give #7 a try on the wood, it should remove most everything but swirl...

I would first try some #7 before the #9 but in either case be VERY VERY gentle to that veneer. Yes the #26 will be a great way to protect your hard work once your done. Just be gentle as possible...
