I tried the hardware store , but came up empty handed

I tried to get the copper washer at Orchand Supply (a fairly big hardware store) and they really didn't have anything close.

(rusty at parts.mbz.org will be able to get it easily)

Performance probably has it on a picture in the catalog, but this may be one time it is easiest and cheapest just to get it at the dealer.

there are washers at the bottom of that

I believe that there are softish copper washers at the bottom of the "valve" that you describe. I would consider replacing this $1 part and retightening to spec. You can clean out the valve needle...
