Dont have to remove fan shroud

No I did not have to remove the fan shroud. I have an 82 300SD (W126 body and 617 engine), so I have enough clearance from under side of the car.

Use the 27mm bolt

I have found it is best to use a 27 mm socket and turn the engine via the bolt inside the crank pulley. It is easy to get to from the bottom of the engine when adjusting the valves.
