There is no "switch" to allow the governor to realize that it's at idle fuel. It must be done with linkages and cams and only activate when the fuel is at a dead idle.

Well, I might dispute the "can easily" part of that statement, if it actually proves to be true.

That would be quite a feat of engineering for a mechanical device. It's just a bunch of springs...

Yes, I had the W123 stall once myself. It doesn't signify a generic problem.

No, the 500 rpm drop will occur regardless of whether the fuel is at idle or whether it's completely shutoff.

That's the torque converter slippage. It has transitioned from a higher engine speed that drives the wheels to a lower engine speed whereby the wheels drive the engine.

When both the impeller...

That's the question.

I'd really like to see how the governor can shut the fuel completely and then turn it back on just as the engine reaches idle. This is the purvey of electronic controls. I'd...

I do not believe a mechanical governor has the ability to shutoff the fuel from the simple inputs of throttle and speed.

I'd be interested to see where you found such info.

Actually not. They seem to need to select a lower gear and then instantly realize that an upshift is required. The transmission seems confused.

You're a bit confused on the function of the ALDA. It's a fuel limiting device. At low rpm levels, where there is insufficient boost, the ALDA limits fuel so the engine does not smoke. If the...

Going into neutral at any speed is fine.

What they don't like, whatsoever, is going into gear at any speed other than zero. So, going to neutral is not the best thing if you must return to gear...

That would be an interesting bit of engineering. The governor has some input to whether the vehicle is accelerating or decelerating at 1000 rpm? And, just how would it know that?

On these older vehicles.........there is nothing to shut down the fuel. So, you get idle fuel quantity at all rpm's. The higher the rpm, the more idle fuel is consumed (more combustion events per...

Your practice of coasting in neutral will yield better fuel economy than maintaining a steady speed by carefully feathering in gear. Although it's a small benefit, the engine gets better fuel...
