See if your local hardware store carries bolts of the same size/thread...or longer. Use the test bolt to measure the depth available.

Yup, that's how it works. On an old water cooled Porsche I had I used one of these to keep temps down. Worked like a charm. IIRC, all I had to do was drain the radiator and replace the sensor.
