He reports good idle so while the idle air control valve could probably use a good cleaning I don't think its the culprit here. Everything sounds like fuel accumulator.

Rotated crankshaft to check each piston, each one goes over deck surface by about 1mm (eyeballed). Don't feel any looseness in any of the Pistons. Oil looks good, no metal at all.

Bought a 300CE a couple of days ago for dirt cheap, excellent body, excellent interior, blown head gasket. No big deal, while I've been away from MB for awhile I've replaced a few m103 head gaskets...

It wouldnt be that hard to do. Any five speed from a m103 OR m102 would work, so take a look at some 190's. You'll have to have the driveshaft elongated and figure out how to get a clutch pedal...
