It's most likely dried/dirty grease on the speedo gears. I've had this occur on a couple of W116 speedos and the solution has been to clean and re-apply some clean lithium grease.

Didn't scrap it. Was too nice for that. What I did do was donate it, through a local 501c3 to someone who needed a car, and the old trooper still has some miles left in it.

It turns out that the R107 pod is actually a direct replacement and fits perfectly.
