Replace the fuel accumulator. My '79 450SL did the exact same thing when I bought it. Its located next to the fuel pump. The internal diaphragm gives out & causes this problem.

Nothing difficult about it. The compressor is to be replaced. Just not now. Disconnect it electrically so as not to cause further damage until owner can replace it at his convenience. sheesh.
